For BAEPLEX, the answer is simple yet powerful: everything.
Our name is more than a label or word—it’s a promise and a reflection of organizational values. The name BAEPLEX was created with intention, rooted in honor, history and culture. It was designed to represent far more than just a martial arts school, it represents a community, a mindset, and a lifelong journey of growth.
The name BAEPLEX is a blend of meaning and purpose. What was once known as Bae’s Taekwondo Karate Academy, has evolved into a much more diverse organization centered around personal development and leadership. Throughout all the growth, we continue to pay tribute to the spark that ignited it all back in 1979, Sang Mok Bae. In 1997, Joseph Ash took over the company and change the name to BAEPLEX, a name he envisioned to honor his late teacher/mentor and inspire coming generations.

Historically, martial arts schools were not simply places to learn how to kick and punch. They were community centers, places of mentorship, and spaces where character was shaped. From ancient dojangs and training halls to modern academies, the name of a school carried the values of its instructors and the expectations placed upon its students. BAEPLEX honors this tradition by standing for more than technique or skill, it stands for character.
Culturally, BAEPLEX represents unity. Our students come from different backgrounds, ages, and experiences, yet they train side by side with a shared purpose. The name reflects that blend—individual stories woven into one strong community. Every bow, every class, every belt earned adds another layer to what BAEPLEX means.
At BAEPLEX, when students put on their uniform, they are not just representing themselves—they are representing the community and culture that has been synonymous with indomitable spirit. That name stands for perseverance when things get hard, respect for others, gratitude for growth, and confidence earned through effort. It reminds our students that they belong to something bigger than themselves.
Moving into the future, BAEPLEX aims to continue bringing the BEST programs, services and leadership to it’s members. Through collaborations with other like-minded industry leaders, we aim to add new programs in health and wellness to further enhance our member experience and overall quality of life. Yet no matter how much we grow, we will always remain true to ourselves. We will remain steadfast and honor the core values Grand Master Bae instilled so long ago: When We falter, We Grow. When we Succeed, We Grow. Whatever the circumstance, Work hard, Remain Humble & Never Give Up.
Our name is our legacy and as such, we will continue to honor it and be grateful for every student that has been, or will ever be a part of our journey.
